The Journey Begins

“You should start a blog.”

This is what my friend, let’s call him “JT”, said to me over the lunch table at Condado’s, downtown Columbus, next to the Commons.  The Columbus Commons is a nice park they built in place of a torn down mall, City Center, but more on that later . .

JT and I meet every now and then for lunch.  We have many friends in common and run in the same circles. We are both musicians.  JT has been over to my house on Saturday’s to play music in the basement.  We like to catch up and talk about what each other is up to, share common problems, find solutions, and generally try to help each other out.  JT is a good friend.

Something I’m passionate about.  Music.

Music makes me feel good and I think it makes other people feel good too.  I’d love to be a part of it professionally.  That’s what sparked the passion for learning everything I can about music.  Plus it literally helped save my life.

I had just got done explaining to JT my latest musical adventures.  I think this particular instance I was trying to get ahold of a local radio DJ to pick her brain on how the radio business worked.  At the same time, a producer in LA and I were talking about beginning production and mixing lessons remotely, and I just got a new piece of guitar gear that was making some awesome sounds.  A new guitar and amp had made a spot in my home and both sounded awesome!  This was on top of all the prior years of experience doing random jobs and collecting stories.

As I was explaining all this to JT, I could see that I as all over the place in the conversation and tried to bring it all back together.  I kind of failed to find a common thread in all of this, except for music, and punted.  “I don’t know where I’m going with all of this, except that it has to do with music.”

It’s taken me a long time to be able to admit something like that, but I finally found it’s just best to admit the truth.

“Sounds like you have a lot of cool things going on, maybe other people would find it interesting.  You should start a blog”.

Hmmm.  I quickly did the mental calculation on how many times I’ve thought about starting a blog, actually started one to let it die, started writing blog software in the 90’s (online diary), etc . . and kind of put the idea away.

Then I thought about the success that Gary Vaynerchuck has had just documenting what he does and how many people he’s helped by putting it out there.

Maybe people would find it useful. Maybe by writing this stuff out I can find the common thread I’ve been seeking, or maybe it will present itself.

One other thing I’ve finally learned over time, is that just thinking about things rarely accomplishes anything, but action usually has a result.

That’s why I’m here tonight writing this.

Not sure I’ll be able to always post, or often enough, or it will be good content, or it will be helpful.  Just like this journey with music, I’m not sure where it leads.  Enough people have mentioned doing this blog that it seems like it’s the next right thing to do.

I will do my best to keep the content music related, creation, production, business, consumption . . .all of it.

So let’s find out what comes next, shall we?
