“Now she’s calling a cab, while he’s having a smoke
and she’s taking a drag, now they’re going to bed
And my stomach is sick, And it’s all in my head . . “
-Mr Brightsides – The Killers
So I woke up this morning after having the most vivid dream. Like it was totally real and the circumstance in the dream was going to happen. I haven’t been remembering my dreams lately because I’ve been flat out exhausted and lacking sleep lately. So here it is:
I dreamt that I was buying a Sears Silvertone 1484 amp!

Always wanted one, they sound sick (GREAT), and this amp is the primary tone machine behind The White Stripes’ and Jack White’s sound. In fact, I had just seen him with one on stage back in June at Express Live. One of my favorite artists.

Maybe that’s where it came from . . Who knows. So anyway, the amp was going to arrive in the mail but what was interesting was who I was buying it from.
Josh Ostrander of Mondo Cozmo.

I have seen Josh with Mondo Cozmo live and actually met him after his show at The Basement last year. Awkwardly handed him a card and said to call if he needed a stage manager in the future … he looked at me funny, nodded his head, and hurried to the next fan 😉 – Sorry, Josh, I’m working on my communication skills.
So anyways, Josh arranged to send me the amp in the mail, let me try it out and buy it. In the dream, when the amp arrived it looked like this:

I thought, what the heck, let’s plug it in and see if it works. So I plugged my guitar into what looked like an old beat up box fan and started playing. It sounded good but as I was trying to get more sounds out of it, it only had one control knob and wasn’t doing what I wanted it to do. Still it sounded pretty cool.
(Still in my dream)
I called Josh up and said, “Hey Josh, I got the amp. It sounds pretty good, but is a little weird with only one control knob. How much do you want for it?”.
Josh says, “Yeah, man , it’s a little kooky like that, but sounds great live. You’ll love it. The only reason I’m getting rid of it is because the label wants me to use something a little more reliable. I’ll sell it to you for $1200.”
So now of course, I switch into bargain mode, even if it’s Josh Ostrander. “Dude, it sounds good, but it’s gonna need some work, the most I can offer is $900.”
It was round about then, that I woke up, disappointed a bit by not seeing if Josh accepted the offer or not, but then scratching my head, like, “Why the heck am I dreaming about this stuff ?”
Then I did remember something about reaching out to Josh to see how they do their live sound. A band I’m working with is having a heck of a time with live sound and just need help. What better way than to reach out to talk to the people that have been doing it? So Mondo Cozmo came to mind last night, because they are really accessible to fans and I’m not well known enough in the industry to pick up the phone and go “Hey, it’s me . . I need some help!”
“Okay, great, Just a Dude, you gave us all this insight into your weird dreams . .so what? “ Is probably what the readers are thinking.
Well, here is what I did with it. I took the dream as motivation to actually take action and reach out to Mondo Cozmo via DM to see what happens.
I also used that inspiration to track down the company behind Vans Warped Tour (4Fini) and get an email out to them about a tour spot that just opened up (Sorry Islander). Something else I had been trying to do, but hadn’t quite got there yet.
I figured, why not?
You see, I always let something get in the way of taking these actions steps to explore new ideas for some reason. Some objection occurs in my mind, some fear presents itself, some type of blocking mental object appears for some reason while I mull over the possible outcomes.
Then nothing happens.
When I’m in a dream state, or coming out of one, my mind says, “Why not”, “Go ahead”, “Anything’s possible”, and it becomes much easier to take these actions for some reason. There’s nothing to lose, so just go do it!! If my mind can conjure up something so ridiculous as to buy an old fan that sounds like a Sears Silvertone 1484 from Mondo Cozmo, well, anything is possible, right? Right!
Anything IS possible.
Dreams inspire for a reason. The more I can keep my mind in the dream state of “Why not”, instead of reality based state of “That’ll never happen”, the more possibilities open up and doors present themselves.
I just need to walk through them.
Have a great Friday everyone!
