So .. .I’m downtown Columbus at Skully’s Music Diner near the Ohio State University campus and heading into a show. It’s way before doors and people are milling around, getting merchandise tables ready, sound checks are underway, and everything is where it’s supposed to be, including the band that I’m there with. By the way, Luke is a top notch sound engineer at Skully’s and did a bang up job with the sound all night. Great job, Luke!
I go over to a march table and say hello to a gentlemen and introduce myself. “Hi, my name is Micket.” he says in reply. “Micket?” – “Yes, Micket.”
“Cool, nice to meet you . . what do you do with the band RIVALS?”, says Just a Dude.
He goes on to explain that he’s the guitarist and we chit chat about where they jumped on the tour with Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (Cleveland) and how LA has been these days. Also, that they drove 40 hours straight to get to this tour.
As I’m looking around their merchandise table, I notice these bracelets. That’s pretty unusual to see bracelets for sale at a concert so I look at little closer. Turns our they are made out of guitar strings.
“Those are the strings we play with. They are going to get thrown out after we use them, and I have time in the van to make things” explains Micket. What a clever idea!
We exchange good byes and go on with our respective show responsibilities. Later on in the night, I see Micket on stage after our band, and he’s doing stuff like this:
So I thought that was pretty cool. I went back and bought one of those bracelets and now in one act a few things have been accomplished:
- Supported a band – maybe they can eat
- Supported an entreprenuer – good on you dude
- Supported music – we need more!
- Helped save the planet!! – More of this too
- Saw some awesome music! – Saved again!!
